7 Keys to Success in Ecommerce

The Ecommerce Marketing Mix

We here at RepricerExpress have a confession to make: we like Buzzfeed. We like it because putting things in listicle form makes it easy to read, fun to follow, and thirsty for more. And when dealing with something that seems broad on paper, like how to rock it in the world of ecommerce, it’s just much easier to attack them one point at a time.

1. Utilize Web Responsiveness

We’re no longer in the Dark Ages, aka that time when using the interwebs was solely limited to heavy, clunky desktops. Now, in the Age of Enlightenment, we’ve got people going at it on more devices than you can shake a stick at and you have to create a site that works on all of them.

Take this example on how not to do things. The Toronto Public Library is the biggest library system in all of Canada and the largest neighbourhood-based system in the world…and yet they don’t have a website designed for phones. Don’t be the TPL and make sure your page is designed with web responsiveness in mind.

2. Keep a Consistent Design Across Platforms

You know how we just said you should optimise for mobile viewing? One of the downsides is the smaller the device, the more fat you have to trim. However, that should never come at a cost of creating different aesthetics for different platforms. You’ve got a brand and a style, and that should be easily visible no matter what device your consumer is using.

3. Keep it Simple, Sweetheart

The KISS method is important in just about every facet of life, but especially so in ecommerce. Your goal is increasing sales/profit/revenue — the more difficult it is for people to find what they’re looking for, the more your bottom line suffers. Think of the difference in a 100m race and a steeplechase race: the former has its entrants running in a straight line from start to finish, while the latter have to contend with puddles and hurdles in their paths.

One really neat way you can simplify things for your shoppers is using cookie crumbs so they can easily keep track of routes. Another is to have a hamburger menu in the top (mobile) with obvious choices to select from or product categories with subcategories (desktop).

4. The Photos, It’s Always about the Photos

Ever gone swiping on Tinder? Who do you swipe right on, and who gets a left? Yup, photos are the first thing that catches someone’s attention, so make ‘em count. If your photos don’t look great, unique and of high quality, people are just gonna swipe left on you.

5. Back up Your Claims with Reviews

Just saying you’ve got awesome products is like having your mom tell the world just how smart and talented you are. The rest of the world smells bias, so you’ve got to back it up with objective opinions. The best way to do that is with customer reviews, and reviews that feature prominently.

6. Show Signs of Security

We don’t mean a healthy dose of self-confidence, but tangible evidence shoppers are buying in a safe place. Display your SSL certificate to prove that what happens in your Vegas, stays in your Vegas.

7. Want Lasting Success in Ecommerce? Be Helpful and Available

Chances are, no matter how well you’ve followed our advice and tested various approaches on real-world people, you’ll still encounter those special snowflakes who somehow find something to have questions about. When — not if — that happens, avail yourself to them and help them with a McDonald’s-worthy smile on your face. Not only can it help boost your sales, but it’s just the right thing to do
