Alibaba Group Impressive 2014 Q3

Alibaba has announced its first financial results since its record breaking initial public offering in September 2014. The Chinese e-commerce giant with an estimated value of $250 billion, reported earnings per share of $0.45 on revenue on $2.74 billion. Shares rose by 4% as a result, reaching a high of $106 per share.

Significant Growth

Jonathan Lu, chief executive officer of Alibaba Group said , “We delivered a strong quarter with significant growth across our key operating metrics. Our business continues to perform well, and our results reflect both the strength of our ecosystem and the strong foundation we have for sustainable growth.”

“Our financial performance this quarter was robust, with revenue growing 54% year on year”, said Maggie Wei Wu, chief financial officer of Alibaba Group. She added, “We continue to execute our focused growth strategy, and the fundamental strength of our business gives us the confidence to invest in new initiatives to add new users, improving engagement and customer experience, expand our products and services and drive long-term shareholder value.”

In the China marketplace, gross merchandise volume increased 49% and active buyers increased 52% year-on-year. Mobile commerce continues to grow with 217 million active app users. For further details, see the full report from Alibaba Group.

The Rise of Mobile Commerce

The graph below illustrates the share of Alibaba’s mobile revenue from the second-quarter of 2012 to the third-quarter of 2014. As of the third quarter 2014, the group’s mobile shopping revenue share amounted to 29.1%, up from 3.8% in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
