More than 100 cities bid for new Amazon headquarters: BBC News reports that US cities seeking to bid for Amazon’s second headquarters will need to submit their proposals by the end of Thursday. Amazon plans to invest $5bn (£3.8bn) and create 50,000 new jobs at the new headquarters, which will be a “full equal” to its Seattle base. The investment will create tens of thousands of other jobs in construction and the surrounding community. More than 100 cities have expressed an interest in hosting Amazon’s new headquarters. Amazon to create 1,200 jobs with new Bolton warehouse: Mark Sweeney at The Guardian reports that Amazon is to create a further 1,200 new jobs with a warehouse in Bolton as it continues its rapid UK expansion. The warehouse, which will be the third to open in the north-west, will be one of a new generation of Amazon facilities that will see staff work alongside robots. Amazon, which will have 15 fulfilment centres across the UK by the end of this year, employing a workforce of 24,000 across Britain. Walmart forecasts $11.5 billion in ecommerce sales this year: Joe at Marketplace Pulse reports that Marc Lore’s, Chief Executive Officer of Walmart Ecommerce US, has revealed that Walmart expects $11.5 billion in US ecommerce sales for 2017. They forecast expect sales to grow by 40% during 2018 and finish with $16 billion in US ecommerce sales for the year. Both Amazon and eBay are larger in terms of US sales alone. However eBay has been growing slowly for years, so inevitably Walmart will overtake them. Continue reading…

The most-watched horror movies on Amazon in 2017: Ashley Rodriguez at Quartz reports that with Halloween almost here, US audiences are scouring streaming services to get their spooky fix. Stephen King’s It! — the original 1990 mini-series, which was remade in September, is the most-watched horror title on Amazon Video, where viewers buy or rent titles. It’s followed by Jordan Peele’s Get Out, a new release that brought in scary returns at the box office, M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, and the low-rent supernatural thriller The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Amazon and eBay profiting from online VAT fraud, says watchdog: Rajeev Syal at The Guardian reports that according to parliament’s spending watchdog, Amazon and eBay are profiting from online VAT fraud while HM Revenue and Customs is failing to use its powers to launch a crackdown. The public accounts committee found that marketplaces run by the internet giants are allowing overseas firms to sell goods without paying 20% VAT – a manoeuvre which is undercutting UK firms. The loss to the public purse may be much higher than the “out-of-date and flawed” HMRC estimate of up to £1.5bn, they said. Continue reading…
